LAURYN HILL, R Kelly and DMX were among the winners at the Source Hip-Hop Music Awards 1999 on Wednesday August 18.

Hill picked up New Artist Of The Year and Album Of The Year at the US hip-hop magazine's star-studded ceremony, held at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles. R Kelly won R&B Artist Of The Year, while DMX went home with two awards -Artist Of The Year - Solo and Live Performer Of The Year.

The Hip Hop Pioneer Awards went to Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash and Kool DJ Herc. Bambaataa couldn't be there but Herc gave an emotive speech on the importance of hip hop to the world. Def Jam label mogul Russell Simmons meanwhile received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Celebrities on hand to present the awards included Mike Tyson, L'il Kim and Will Smith. There were also live performances from Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, Puffy Combs, Nas, Busta Rhymes and Janet Jackson.
